My adopted kitten was abused and discarded at one month. He has had surgery on his eyes to open them up because of the abuse and spent one month in ICU. Would this have something to do with his not meowing?

Yeah...probably because of the tube they inserted down his throat during surgery. Sometimes this will affect their meow...possibly some vocal cord damage. Same thing happened when a kitten I used to have had surgery to be neutered. He had a retained testicle and the surgery lasted longer than anticipated. He barely meowed after that and it was because of the breathing tube. Ask your Vet, to be sure. Poor little baby kitty...

He may be just too afraid to say anything, considering his dicey past. Give him plenty of love and attention. On your next visit to your vet, ask them if they can find anything physically wrong. We have a 7 year old cat that has never meowed and rarely, RARELY purrs. She growls and hisses, but has never meowed . . . at least not when we've been around her She, too, came from an abusive home.

When cats are nervous they don't meow until they're more comfortable. My cat was perfectly normal and came from a VERY good home, but she was nervous and she didn't meow for the first year! Now she'll "talk" to you by meowing and when you say something she'll meow back. So I don't think it's really anything to worry about, when he gets more comfortable he'll be fine.

Meowing is not a natural sound for a cat. Wild cats don't meow. House cats learn to meow because it gets the the attention of humans They'll learn that meowing gets us to pet them, feed them, etc. So he should pick it up in time.

I don't believe you should worry too much. My cat doesn't ever meow, ever. Ok maybe once a month, but even then it doesn't really sound like a meow.

Sorry I don't know the answer. My cat never ever purrs. And she doesn't rub against my legs like most cats do.

May just want to keep quiet, might be a scared thing...thinking if you can't hear him you won't hurt him.

Give it time and dont' worry too much. Just give him lots of luv
