I would suggest working with your volunteer center. Your local center is called New York Cares:

They can provide you with one-time, short-term, and long-term volunteer opportunities that match your interests and meet real community needs.
I work with one of the other Hands On Network and Points of Light affiliates and they really provide a great way to connect your local community with different volunteer opportunities, and really help you make a difference with your unique talents.
