Why would you think it's meat?
Eggs sold at grocery stores are not a baby chicken , baby chickens come from FERTILIZED eggs, however, eggs sold in the store are unfertilized so there is no chance of it becoming a bird.
However, eggs like Pilipino balut sold in Asian markets, are baby chickens but it is rare.
Eggs aren't poultry since by definition, poultry is actual birds. They are not meat since in context meat = flesh of animals.
thus
Chicken = Meat
Egg = NO Meat

Neither. It has nothing to do with cows or goats, so it is not a dairy product. Meat is usually defined as the flesh of an animal, so eggs are not meat.

I can find beer nuts in the beverage aisle, salsa in the chips aisle, chocolate dipping sauce in the fruit section. So with the logic of the idiots answering this; nuts are a beverage; salsa is a chip; chocolate is a fruit, when in the form of a sauce.
Eggs are considered a meat for the sake of the dietary pyramids. Although they are not flesh, we do not kill to obtain eggs, they contain more cholesterol per ounce than most meat products.
They are simply eggs, not a meat and definitely not a dairy product.
I do like the answer directly below me, it reveals a lot about how we've come to define foods. Fish is not a meat according to ancient law, very interesting. Although, the Kashrut doesn't say the egg is dairy, it just says it isn't meat.

Egg fertilised or unfertilised comes from chicken s womb and has no difference in texture and basic content. The unfertilised egg inside the chicken will become fertilised if it meets with rooster sperm. So definitely unfertilised eggs are the the female chicken gamette and has the life producing cells. Its different that they will not grow into a fully fledged life till they are fertilised and thus can be treated as chicken periods. So I see no difference in the meat of the chicken and its egg so ideally egg is nothing but meat.
Now coming to diary, there is no way egg is similar to milk. Milk is developed inside female animal s breast which has no life producing cells in it. Milk is universal food of love and motherhood accepted by all (except vegans) and does not fall under the category of veg or non veg. When a baby takes birth it needs to take mother s milk and vegans would have done it. So how can eggs be similar milk. Definitely eggs are not diary but meat.

It's kind of in it's own category own, but it's much closer to meat than dairy.
Dairy products are milk derived products - if it's not milk or made from milk it's NOT dairy.
The proximity of eggs to the dairy section in the grocery store has little to do with what food group they are in. Bacon is usually close to the milk and butter as well - is bacon also dairy according to the people that use the milk section rationale?
From the answers I see here, I think one can safely assume that health class is no longer taught in the school system. This is something you should have learned in grade school.

Eggs are definitely DAIRY. Eggs also are a great source of protein. Many people substitute eggs for meats, when dieting because of their protein values. Many dairy products do have sources of protein in them. Just like many vegetables contain sources of carbohydrates, but that doesn't mean they belong in the bakery isle.
Look in any grocery isle...Eggs are always with the dairy products like milk, yogurts, cottage cheeses, margarine's and cheese. They are not found in the meat departments. Grocery stores are categorized by product venue,.dairy with dairy. My husband has been a grocery manager for 47 years. No matter how technical you want to be...Eggs are dairy.
Toph: The food pyramid is distinguished by food values. Eggs are a high protein food, consistent with the value of meats. So as a daily requirement for those who don't eat meats, eggs are a good alternative source of protein. the Food pyramid is only a guide for food values. Eggs are a dairy, weather you want them to be or not. Calling someone an idiot for not agreeing with you, because I have had 47 years experience in this, says more about you than anyone else.

It is definitely diary if you are Jewish. I'm not kidding. This is a fragment of the definition of the word "dairy", as it can be found in the dictionary.com:
8. (in Jewish dietary law) of or pertaining to those foods, including all milk products, eggs, fish, vegetables, etc., that may be eaten at a meal in which milk is served, in contrast to meat and meat products, which may not.
Why is it so important, anyway? It doesn't look like meat and it doesn't look like dairy, either. You know what? I think it is time we came up with a new category: "Eggs and other kinds of food that we like but have no idea what they are". Enjoy your meal!
WHO GAVE ME TUMB(S) DOWN AND FOR WHAT? THAT ONLY PROVES THAT THE IQ OF SOME PEOPLE ON Y/A IS EVEN LOWER THAN THE ONE OF AN EGG!!! I SPOKE.

Dairy means food that comes from MILK or cattle. Therefore it is a meat. It is a source of protein and not of calcium like a dairy product would be. Your friends are wrong and I cant beleive so many people ae telling you it's Dairy. Dairy farmers do not raise Chickens.
