Well to be honest Buddhism is not a religion but a philosophy. There is no dogma no do this because someone said it or because it is written in some book.

Check out the book Buddhism Is not what you think by Steve Hagen!

Buddhism A way of life and thought by Nancy Wilson Ross

Hi,
You may want to visit http://www.lioncity.net/buddhism this is a Buddhist online forum which you can ask questions there. There will be more Buddhists who are able to direct u to more help e.g. centers of learning in ur area, etc.

Like what one answerer suggest, buddhanet.net is a good website for learning as well.

this may help.

what you have to do first is go to a page of Dharma. this page will tell you the basic of what we do in Theravada Buddhist religion in Thailand.

Then Go to a page of meditation, if you want to do something more higher than a basic level.

all of them, I try to make them as short as possible and right into the point because I knew just few people love to read.

ok i was interesting in studying budhism a while ago- them main things is enlghitment and innner peace

a quick Budda story:
A man had a house and a farm. He was married and had three kids. His house was always loud and one day he went to Buddha to ask for help.
“Buddha,” he said “My house is to loud, what should I do?”
Buddha replied, “Take a chicken from you farm and keep in your house for a day. Then pray agin.”
The next da the man prayed saying, “Buddha, my house is even louder then before. What should I do?”
“Take a dog from your farm and keep him and the chicken in the house together.”
The day after that the man prayed saying, “Buddha, my house is even louder then before. What should I do?”
Buddha told the man to bring a cow into the house. “For each day this week,” he said, “bring another farm animal into your house to live with you…then pray again.”
Finally at the end of the week the man cam to Buddha saying, “I can no longer take this my house is so loud!”
Buddha answered him, “Now take all the animals out of your house.”
The next day the man returned, “thank you Enlightened One,” he said, “My house is much quieter now.”

You need to read the Dhammapada. It is one of the closer sources of Buddhism, to the Buddha. I believe it is the words of Buddha himself. Also, but a book on the life of Buddha. THey generally help a lot, telling about his life and his beliefs.

The reasons that we can see many Buddhas statue because it different manifestation, it is just a figure to remind us his pure qualities as we can't see his pure body as we have a very obscure mind now. we have one historical Buddha-who was Buddha shaykadmuni, but it have countless of others Buddha and Bodhisattva existing, they may manifest even as a human form (like many of them believe His Holiness Dalai Lama is a manifestation of cherizig).

In Buddhism, Buddha strongly discourage us to just simple worshiping with blind faith, he wish us to really use our intelligent to study, contemplate the teaching, ask tonnes of question if we are in doubt, even challenge the teaching if it not make sense to us...

Buddhist have many tradition Theravada (which is a lesser vehicle that aim for individual liberation, Mahayana (which is the great vehicle that aim for gain full enlightenment for all beings), even in mahayana we have different sect like zen, Chinese, Tibetan (which have 4 school)...

depend on which country you are in, there are also one international office which you may wish to study with-FPMT (Foundation of Preservation of Mahayana Training).

In buddhism, buddha taught about 4 noable truth: suffering, cause of suffering, cessation of suffering, and path to enlightenment. And eight fold path: right view and right intention (which are practicing of wisdon), right speech, right action, right livlihood (which are practicing of ethical conduct), right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration (which are practicing of mental development), we also been taught about karma and rebirth, death and impermanent etc...

there are several website you could get more info about it Buddhism. the few websites which i recommend are:

www.fpmt.org
www.buddhnet.com
www.thubtenchodron.com

I know, it is good to read and know about somethings in General
You can study it, it is a good idea

However, it might effect you!!!

And then you will be just like those people on the time of prophet Ibraham, when they used to worhip Idols

The funny thing is that they created them themselves, lol

Anyways, I better not insult faiths

Reading is good, that's the summary
