as to not get our pubic hair stuck in the zipper, or as to not get our skin stuck in the zipper
also so support our "junk"

I would imagine that it began when washing clothing was not so simple. Underwear covers part of the body and can be simply washed without having to wash an entire garment everytime. I don't wash or dry clean my clothing after every wear (depending on the item, its not good for it) so if there was no underwear, it would be kinda icky.

Because we are taught to wear them. It has become a human decency issue. The real history was protection of our outer garments. Not mention added warmth in colder climate. I knew a girl that wore dresses all the time without underwear and she was real popular with the guys. The girls hated her.

I'm going to assume it's more comfortable for guys to wear some sort of underwear than just jeans but as for us girls, we wear it for:
--Warmth.
--It's sexy.
--Underwear are easier to clean than jeans/pants.
--If we have our period, we need something to put the pad on (overnight)
--Sexy underwear.
--Less likely to have an embarrassing situation
--It's a nice transition from diapers and I guess it's stuck ever since.
However, I do know some people that do not wear underwear.

It's an extra barrier between ourselves and other people. Underwear covers what is perceived by society to be our "private" parts. Many cultures find sex to be dirty and/or even evil.
At the very least, it absorbs secretions.

People wear underwear to:
Prevent chafing of our delicates against our outer clothes,
To hide the visible outlines of our delicates,
To provide support,
Protect things from zippers and button pinches,
&
To keep clothes fresh and dry
