Some reasons why
(1) It has just endured a long, dark ride in a small bumpy place with lots of strange noises and it can't see. No matter how long your drive from the place of sale and your home, it will seem like forever in a small dark place where it can't see anything.
(2) It is now in an exposed cage where everything can see it and there is a big scary thing staring at it (you or somebody else).
(3) Its in a new place it doesn't know and can't find too many places to hide.
(4) It has been grabbed and touched on the back where it doesn't like to be touched because that's here its predators sneak up on it from.
(5) If you cut its wings, it can now only fall sort of gracefully and not get away to easily. Again it has been grabbed (refer to #4)
(6) It has no friends now (unless you got more than one) and it still has the big scary thing trying to get it.
Try to give them time to settle into their new home and give it a shelter to hide from other "big scary things" to help make it feel safe. Let it ajust to its cage before you start to take it out and train it.

A new bird is afraid because it's in a different environment. It doesn't know if you are a friend or foe..meaning if they are going to be safe. With patience your new bird will see you as a friend. Some birds become friendly then others. A finch for example will probably not get as comfortable with you as a parakeet. Just the act of feeding and watering your bird will help get them used to you.

That would depend on if the bird was hand fed and used to people. Most birds are a little nervous at first. Just think if you were put into a box or crate, moved to a strange place then put into a strange cage with strangers looking at you.

No matter what the bird, the answer is simple.... in comparison to them, you're HUGE. Also, you keep them in a cage, chances are best that the wings are clipped so they can't fly, and you had to put them in the car to get home. It takes a couple of days, but he/she will stop being pissed off at you for traumatizing them soon.
