I recently reinstalled windows xp into my computer. Now whenever i enter the windows gui a error pops up and tells me that rundll32.exe is missing and that i need to go to a website to download a program to restore it. Now is this a spyware/virus problem? Because it didnt happen before i reinstalled windows. Also I cant activate xp either. A icon would notify me that xp will need to be activated in 30 days, so when i go try to activate it. Windows tells me that it has already been activated. So what do i do????

yeah it says something like unable to locate component rundll32.exe and then gives me a website to go and download a program to fix it. Kinda sounds like spyware/trojan to me. But it happend right after i did a clean install of xp. Also trying to activate xp is a problem too.

The real "rundll32.exe is missing" error will not ask you to go to a website to download any program. What you have is a malware in your pc. You need to get an antivirus app and a couple of antispyware apps to try to remove this. There are quite a few free programs that you can download and try. For antivirus i would use Avira Antivir PE. For antispywares, use Spybot search & destroy, A-Squared Free, Spyware Blaster, AdAware PE and maybe Window defender. If that does not work, you need to format your hard drive, reinstall a clean version of Win XP, install antivirus and antispywares apps and run a full scan before doing anything else. Formating the hd will kill any virus or malwares.

Did you have a retail WinXP disc or a pirated copy???? The malware maybe on the disc if it's a copy. Also did you install any program after Win XP ??? One of them may be the culprit.

I would need more details to know for sure but I bet you're receiving the same misleading error message I got when I reinstalled xp. It says something like rundll32 entry point not found. Makes it sound like rundll32 is missing when actually it is a problem with the dll file rundll32 is trying to run. In my case the drivers for my video card were to blame, so I upgraded them and got on with my life. It may be the same with you, which would explain why you get the error message when entering the gui. By the way there are some trojans and worms that go by the same name, I doubt that is the case but if I were you I would do a few av scans to be on the safe side.
