I think seeing a therapist is worth a try if you're having some sort of problem.
Definitely be picky.
Personally, I would look for a Christian counselor, and since I'm a woman, I'd prefer to talk to a woman. If you're comfortable with asking for recommendations (from clergy, doctors, friends, etc.), you should do so. You could also consider online counseling.
Otherwise, if you meet with someone and find you don't connect, don't be afraid to find someone new.
I know that's probably not very helpful, but I don't have a lot of experience with this. Good luck!

I dont think they are a bad idea, especially if you dont have alot of friends to talk to about your problems. Then again sometimes talking about you problems with friends can sometimes send them into the oposite direction and stressed over your situation. A true friend will help you through any problem but if you swamp them with all your problems they may get sick of it. I suggest trying out a therapist, and if you don't like them that well then you can always find another. Therapists are paid to listen and you wont find them saying sorry can't talk right now I have my own problems to deal with lol. Good luck with the search...if you do search.

Just my personal opinion here. I say that I know myself better than anyone else, and I should be able to overcome any problems on my own steam and by my own mind. Knowing you have the strength to fix things yourself is a good thing. But I do concede that some people probably should utilize therapy if they're not strong enough to deal with it themselves. Everyone's different.

It depends on what you need therapy for. If you have been sexually abused or raped find a female who often does councelling for this I hate therapists they are expensive & mine didn't offer any support or much advice DO what you feel to be right for you not what I recommend

Counselling is great if you find one you are comfortable with. Do NOT go with anyone that pushes you towards toxic meds, shrinks, or tells you "meds will help you do therapy." Run fast in the opposite direction! Yes, pick half a dozen and go interview THEM. I did. You are looking for somebody who kind of turns you on sexually so that when that is frustrated all your old problems with your parents come rushing out. It's a great high.

I'm all for therapists.
Ask for recommendations.
Try the person out and see if it's a good fit.
