I just got a 4 month old pup from a rescue. I was told it was lab/hound mix and on the internet it said lab/hound mix. Everyone keeps saying it looks more like a German Shepard mix. When I looked through the paper work we recieved I noticed that the lady wrote Shepard/hound mix.
I have a 6yr old and 4 yr old, are German Shepard's good with kids? Are they aggressive? I havent heard much about hound dog's, but now thinking about it, they may not of had that part right.

It should be fine, especally being so young and growing up with the kids. German Shepards make great protective pets. i wouldn't worry.

I would worry less about the breed of the dog (especially given the huge personality variations to be found just within a breed) and more about teaching your kids how to play with him and how not to upset him, and not leaving the younger one unsupervised with the pup until he's older and has a little more common sense (the kid AND the dog). Things that your 4 year old thinks is fun, may be considered a challenge to the dog. Staring it down, fast moves, grabbing tails and ears, all can cause an otherwise happy friendly dog to bite.

For what it's worth, your kids would be just as likely to be bitten by a Cocker Spaniel than a German Shepard, according to the American Association of Medical whatever (I forget now).

As puppies, german shepherds might be a little bit rough with your kids because of how they love to chew. Also, in order for your dog to obey you and your kids, everyone in the house will have to contribute to disciplining it. This maybe hard for kids because they tend to be more of push overs to the dog ( they think they're cuter and sweeter). Another bad thing about german shepherds and kids is that german shepherds can get pretty big. That means if you're kids are pretty little right now, and your german shepherd is already rather large, it's going to be hard on your kids to run and lay with the dog. If it jumps on a little kid, they'll be knocked down instantly. Rather than their size and other things mentioned, I think a german shepherd would be good for kids.

I have a german shepard mix and he's great with my friends kids. The only problem we encounter is that he doesn't realize how big he is sometimes and when he gets excited we have to watch that he doesn't knock the kids over! But he's a great watch dog and very loving. If you raise your new pup to be loving and kind, I believe that you won't have any problems.

a German Shepard is a good dog if trained properly just keep in mind they are Shepards bread with the herding instinct and they get to be a large dog that could potentially do a lot of damage they can not be allowed to think they are in charge

i cannot stress enough when i say it is very important to socialize your new dog with your kids. start taking him/her everywhere with you and the kids. i mean holidays the park and swimming etc. he will soon become the best friend they ever had. oh and obidience classes will help too. german shepherds will only be aggressive if they have been mistreated some way. good luck and what a wonderful thing you have done

My grandfather has had many german shepherds over the years and all of them have been good with children. In fact one used to let my cousins and I ride on him when we were really little. Of course it's all in the training. Also you have to keep in mine that german shepherds, by nature, are very protective, so you have to be careful with strangers. His current shepherd will circle around anyone who comes near my grandfather or I and get upset if someone shakes out hands.

it depends on how the dog was treated by its owners. if they were abused then yea they will be aggressive to kids that's how they react or reacted to their old owners. if its a stray then it would be hard to tell but mostly they are great with kids as what i know of i have a German Shepard myself n its really great with the neighborhood kids

German Shepherds are usually real good dogs.
like the people above have said, theyre loyal and will most likely be protective.
I used to have 2 german shepherds and they were awesome.
then again...they were k-9 unit police dogs...that my dad trained himself, since he's a cop.
