You can't make E4 out of boot camp. E3 is the highest rank you can be meritoriously promoted to out of boot camp. Depending on what A school you have, if you are the number one student in your class you can be advanced to E4. This isn't the case for every A school though. Also, it is not a spot promotion if you get it. It is up your first command on when you will be advanced to E4. They have up to 6 months to do this. If you come into the Navy as an E3 and depending on how long your A school is, it may be quicker for you to take the advancement exam to make rank. Good luck and keep up your hard driving attitude.

E-3 is as high as you can go coming out of boot camp (I got E-3 meritoriously coming out of boot camp). Now, ...some "A" schools will advance the top few graduates in each class to E-4 IF they sign extention papers (extending their tour from 4 to 6 or from 6 to 8 years) after graduating. Once you're in the fleet, you'll find out what a "push button" E-4 is.

mu husband is in the Marine Corps so it may be very different but you can indeed get meritorious promotions in bootcamp, but I think my husband told me that only one guy got it and then he was made somewhat of a leader (obviously because of his higher rank) but that came with a price, everytime anyone screwed up, he got to pay for it.

and My husband got promoted during his first MOS school, so I guess just do really well and good luck!

I was automatically advance to E4 after my first A-school ( first 9 months into the military) in the navy, with no board or test of any kind. It must be in your contract and it usually offered to people in high tech (high asvab) fields and you are usually asked to sign up for 6 years to get the automatic advancement. This is in the Navy im not sure about the other branches.
