I heard that you couldn't touch them. I'm not sure if this is a fact or not. Please explain and give me a source if you can.

I heard that it was a belief that you couldn't touch the words of the Torah. But why do they believe that is what I want to know.

The Torah is highly respected and when you read a book with your finger/s going across the page, the oil from your fingers makes the pages become more ugly! So, the Torah, especially for one's bar/bat mitzvah, they use a pointer (or 'yad') so that their fingers won't have to touch the page! Hope this helped

by touching the writing, it is possible to damage the letters. even one damaged letter renders the entire scroll invalid. simple damage can be easily repaired by a trained scribe. severe damage can result in the scroll being irreparable.

a new torah scroll costs about $30,000. preventable problems need to be avoided.

The oil in your finger would cause some damage to the scroll.

You can do whatever you want.
If your too gullible to accept that you can't touch it, then that is you.

Government has a lot of controls too.
