I'm thinking of taking my now 1.5 year old cats (two of them) camping with us this summer. providing I am able to fit the extra stuff in the outback. my cats are leash trained and enjoy our trips out to the park that we took them on on nice days in the summer last year. I think they will enjoy it. I'll have a large or a medium sized dog crate to put them in at night or if we leave the campsite. they would only really be out while we are at camp.

anyone have any suggestions or experinces with taking cats camping with them. this camp site would be about a 20-30 min drive from home so if they freak out too much we can bring them home. anything I have to watch out for besides ticks and fleas?

any imput would be very helpful. I want to have this all planned out before the camping season begins.

You'd have to tie them up at all times if not in the crate or on a walk. Like a dog, you wouldn't want to get away. But cats are so different, they need places to romp around in and not be tied up to a tree.

For some reason I just can't imagine a cat being leashed trained, although I suppose it is possible.

Don't forget the litter box, most cats that are trained in a litter box won't "go" in the outdoors.

I know a couple people that take their cats camping.

Besides ticks and fleas and mites, you need to watch for wild animals. Even if the wild animal can't get into a carrier, it will still freak out the cats. You might consider bringing the cats inside your tent at night.

I would be afraid that they would run away or get lost. If they stay with you then they should be fine.
