When you have opened a can of food and you’re not using all the food straight away, empty the food into a bowl, or other container, and put it in the fridge.
Don’t store food in an opened tin can, or re-use empty cans to cook or store food. This is because when a can has been opened and the food is open to the air, the tin may transfer more quickly to the can’s contents.
This advice doesn’t apply to foods sold in cans with resealable lids, such as golden syrup and cocoa.
Further, when you open a can you have a ridge at the top from the can opener. If not sealed air tight, food remainants will spoil on that portion quickly, while the rest of the food in the can remains OK longer. When you pour past the spoiled portion, you'vr contaminaited everything else.
It used to be a safety issue.(It may not be so much now but Mum taught me to do it that way so I do.) There's a rational reason
Older alum cans may not have been treated on the inside surface as well.
Exposure to the air may cause some oxidation of the inside of the can.
Citric juices can speed this process if left in an opened can.
This is what we are told by food inspectors at our store also.

Yes it is safe but you should put a cover on the can. There are some chemical reactions between the tin an product but it is safe. The shelf life in the refrigerator would be long if you place the canned food into a clean bowl etc. and cover properly.

It's always been said you could get poisoned if the can is rusty and if you have a liquid based product the can may rust...not sure how true that is so just put in in a plastic container to be safe.

Yes it is safe. However i wouldn't leave it uncovered. I'd put plastic wrap over it and help keep the freshness. Or put it in a sealable container if you're worried about it going bad.
