If the bible is supposed to be taken metaphorically, which is how I believe most interpret it, isn't the figure of God a metaphor as well? Couldn't that figure just represent the faith in your course and actions in life and a belief that everything will work out? That makes sense to me.

The bible is the most accurate book ever made. its scriptures were all in accordance with each other. How well do you know the bible? If God is a metaphor... we could also conclude that air is just the same.

we could not see the air but its evidence is widely known and so is God's presence.

Science cannot even answer the question "why people die?" when every evidence in human body says that we are meant to live forever.

do a little more research of God's creations and you will find most of the answers there.

If that is how you wish to believe, you are free to do so. However, the language and the text reveal God as a personal God. One that intervenes on behalf of man. If He was a metaphor, then Jesus would have said so. He did not, He actually solidified the Father as being how the Torah describes Him.
Now Jesus used metaphors to describe the Father. A good example would be the Prodigal Son. Jesus would not use a metaphor to describe a metaphor. If God were as you describe, then there would be no such thing as prophecy. Metaphors cannot see the future as if it were present and declare it to man.
So really, it all depends on whether you want to know the truth about God, or shape Him into your own image. Which, by definition, would be idolotry.

Dear Grizzly,

although the bible is certainly a book that talks about faith, love, and other ethereal concepts, it details the life of many real flesh and blood people. No one argues that Pontius Pilate is only a metaphor. No one argues that King Herod is only a metaphor. No one argues that Peter, Paul or John the apostle are only metaphors. No one argues that the story of the Jews is only a metaphor, that their exodus out of Egypt is a metaphor.

As a matter of fact, Adam and Eve were real people in a real garden, King David was a real king who slew a real giant, and Jonah was real prophet who was swallowed by a real hungry large fish.

And Jesus Christ was a real person who lived, taught , died, and rose again and ascended into the sky in front of his disciples.
A metaphor? You think men and women would lay down their lives for a metaphor??? you think the early Christians would rejoice in that they were worthy to be persecuted for Christ's name sake because Christ was metaphor??? You think Peter would gladly be crucified upsidedown because Jesus was a metaphor???

Does that make any sense to you???

think about it

god bless

It is not surprising that this makes sense to a person that is lost. The Bible is NOT to be taken metaphorically. God is NOT to be taken metaphorically. Only a lost soul could believe this. Until God draws you to come to Christ, you will never understand. Not the Bible. Not God. Not Jesus. Not truth. Only the lies that you now believe.

A metaphor for what? A metaphor is a way of saying something in symbolic words. What do you think God, who created the heavens and the earth symbolizes?

Don't worry, you're not alone. God (Divinity, whatever you want to call It) is what has put order to the universe, no one can argue this point, because, it is Truth. Divinity is Perfect, and we are Not, so therefore, how dare -any- of us claim to know exactly what Divinity is? Religion is about forming a -personal- relationship with Divinity.

Personal. Think about it. How many people are you in the course of a day? Child, parent, student, teacher, friend, confidante, etc., how many more must Divinity be?

It drives me crazy that people try to put Divinity in a box as if they are the only ones who have access to it. Get real, God is Everywhere, don't you know that? Doesn't your book say something about that?

Divinity is where you find It, whatever you want to call it, even if it's Physics, because God is what has put Order to the Universe.

only some parts of the bible are metaphorical, like revelation. if it were all metaphorical, then it wouldnt be a religion, it would just be a philosophy.

Maybe you are just a metaphor, and we can interpret your words any way that we want to.
