Not all dogs do this. ;)

Many people believe that dogs howl in response to fire-truck and police sirens because it hurts their ears. However, the response is actually instinctual behavior of howling in response to another dog's howl. Pack animals like wolves and dogs will howl in harmony as a form of staying in touch over distances and communicating between packs.

The sound of the siren sounds similar to a dog's ears than howling, so they instinctively respond to it.

And no, they do NOT howl because "it hurts their ears". Dogs will respond with howling to other sounds, such as a clarinet, flute, or other instrument as well that's neither overly loud nor very high pitched.

Some dogs have more sensitive hearing than others. Same as humans, and the pitch of the siren hurts their ears. The dog may also translate this howling siren as a pack call...similar to wolves in the wild. They hear one start to howl and the others join in so they know where each other are...remember dogs are like wolves in the living room. Any dog will bark at something...
they can't help it, and you can't stop it. Its just how much you are willing to put up with that helps you pick which breed is right for you.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7fZ

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.
