Ah, that fictional book is a Trinity: Dante's Inferno, Dante's Purgatory, and Dante's Heaven.
This was a story more about Dante's love for a woman than it was to enlighten us about Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. However, he did parallel his Character to being that of Jesus in that he portrayed himself going into Hell without dying, and having the powers to "Ascend" at the guidance of the under keepers to Purgatory & Heaven; which were eupahmisms for evolving the relationship out of lust (hell) and blooming into love (heaven).

There are not circles of Hell. Hell is the fire with which YHVH purifies this earth, getting rid of sin and sinners, so He can make it over, and new.
