Once they got to the U.S., why did they go to Kansas?

because the US government was giving away land they promised the indians. the US broke every treaty they signed with the indians.

One of my guesses is for the ranch land. For example, here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, we had a LOT of cattle herders come down here for the cheap land for their cattle.
In the case of Kansas, I am guessing that people went there for farmland. I, myself, wouldn't mind having about 40 acres and a mule!

Yep, free land. They were handouts called "Homesteads." Had the same thing further out west to get people to occupy more of the continent. If I am not mistaken, they would give you several dozen acres (or more) for free, as long as you agreed to farm it. Later on, they sold it for very cheap instead of giving it away.

they went where the land was plentiful. my ancestors ended up in Virginia and migrated to Missouri. i have family all over the united states.

free land and they didn't have to live in NYC slums. same as today.
