here is a link to a network of custom tattoo artists. they are listed on the right by state. look at the ones that are closest to you and see if any of them specialize in portraits. don't go to someone who doesn't have an impressive portrait portfolio! i have seen some really bad portraits!!

my artist is also known around the world and in the community for his portraits...he's out in California though...people fly from all over the world to get inked by him. His wait time is about 4-6 months out though.

Make a special road trip to Atlanta - and make sure you call now for an appointment - with Brandon Bond. That guy is suuuuch a slayer. If you can't get him, think about it someday, but the other people mentioned above are good, too. Good Luck, have fun. Best birthday present I can think of....

The most important thing when evaluating portrait artists is to see a photo of what they tattooed to see how well they captured the subject matter.
It is one thing when there are recognizable faces like Elvis to evaluate, but tattoos of random people (and pets) can look great on the website or in their portfolio but when you compare them to who they are supposed to resemble, that is when you can evaluate the true level of artistry!

I don't know if he'll be heading your way anytime soon, but Josh Carlton is amazing. He's traveling around the US right now doing work.

Check out his site to see.
Also, Sean Herman at All Or Nothing tattoos is amazing. They're in Atl GA, which isn't too far away, I think?

If you want something cartoony (new school) Josh Woods is amazing. He's at all or nothing too.
