Michael P - I am Michael P too and I live in Virginia USA and not NYC but I know NYC as well as you know your home town in the UK. We love the Brits over here on this side of the pond. The only other good peoples in the world. Lots and lots of chilled milk in NYC as that is the only way we have it. You must be thinking of that fake milk in those thumb sized tubs that cheap places in USA serve. Tell them to stick them where the sun don't shine. Ask your Internet browser for tea in NYC before coming and you will find some really good spots. Every corner store in USA sells chilled milk. Watch that we have more 2% and skim milk as women will drink diet here and then use that to justify 2 extra pounds of chocolate and two large orders of fries. Americans are fat. Watch for fake butter and "honey" margarine in USA too. Nasty stuff that you don't want on your scone or you will have to trash it too. Government allows them to call fake stuff "butter" here. I love NYC. Good tea shop you find on internet will have good chilled milk. Remember that iced tea is much much better than hot tea though. We drink hot tea at night to relax or when we have a cold - otherwise iced tea rules. We learned that when we threw it in the Boston Harbor.

It is very cold at present, dress warmly in layers. Inside shops etc...it is always overheated, so you want to be able to shed a sweater to be comfortable inside. Your UK winters have nothing on the ones in the US, and you will come to dread the words "wind chill factor". Today it's in the 40s Fahrenheit and 6 degrees Celsius.I am amazed that you couldn't find tea bags or milk. There are a million Dagastino's (a popular grocery shop) shops and delis where you can buy both all over Manhattan. If you have internet access you can do a search, or just stop someone on the street and ask if you could get directions to the nearest market.
If you want a real pot of tea while you are there visit Tea and Sympathy, in the West Village, 106-110 Greenwich Avenue; 212-989-9735 or my fave Danal located in the East Village, 90 E 10th Street (at 3rd Ave) (212) 982-6930. Both of these are in the downtown area.
The pound is very strong right now, so I wouldn't worry abut the price of teabags :)

Bring your own tea since you know what you like. You get milk from any corner store. Sorry I'm not a New Yorker, but live 20 minutes from Newark Airport. Dress for very cold for now, like in layers, but make sure you have lighter stuff because the temperatures are going up slightly. At least if you have layers you can take some off if you get too warm. Good advice whoever said check weather.com. Have a fun, happy, and safe trip!!

The weather in NY has been crazy lately. We've been up and down, but I would go with very cold. Simply because the wind chill factor. And this year Feb. is 18 degrees lower than it usually is. If you mean chilled milk, as in like a gallon of milk you can get that pretty easy. If you're into one specific brand of tea, you should bring a box with you incase you can't find it in the states. I don't know what borough you are going to, but there is a bodega (corner store) on every block.

Depends what you consider "very cold". I'm used to cold weather. The past couple days have been a little warmer (40-45°F). The forecast for Friday is mid 20s. Dress in layers so you can add or remove layers as necessary. You can buy chilled milk at any food market, the local deli, grocery stores, etc.

If you are staying in a hotel - which it sounds like you might be - I cannot see why you can't ask room service or a resteraunt for chilled milk. You don't have to ask for it cold though, all milk here is cold, unless you find it in the trash or in the cow.
Coffee shops and diners have the bowl of plastic half n half on every table, this is a substitue for cream or milk, but you can always ask for hot water and cold milk. Good Luck.

good point with bringing your own tea -- decent teabags around here do cost a bit more. but in case you run out of supply, just head over to tea & sympathy in the west village. they sell (and serve) everything british there. :-)
chilled milk can be bought everywhere. harder to find in the middle of times sq than in a neighborhood-y place, of course.
oh and as for weather -- dress for cold. if it gets too chilly, just buy new stuff. nyc is also great for shopping.

hello and welcome in advance!
re the weather... depends on what cold and very cold mean to you but i would definitely dress for cold and remember there are many "wind tunnels" in the City and the wind makes the temps seem even colder. To determine the weather report durng your stay you should probably go to a weather site, type in New York, New York or a zip code for NYC one of which is 10019. Many weather sites will give you extended forecasts, tell you of showers, be they snow or rain, temps (in farenheit... you'll have to do the math to celcius), sun, clouds, sunset, sunrise... all that you may need. so do this before packing!
Re chilled milk for your tea... hopefully you have a frige in your hotel room to keep it that way. you can buy milk in any market or supermarket (large or small)... even at mini-markets at gas (petro) stations.
have a wonderful stay!

Dress for very cold, if you luck out it will only be cold and you can downdress. I don't think you can walk 100 feet without being able to purchase cold milk here. Good luck and email me if you have any problems!:]
