1. All treatments take time (months) to show improvement.
2. A lot can be done.
3. Most over the counter medications and creams are a waste of money.
4. Most foods do NOT make a difference (sorry mom).
The first medication used today is Retin A. This is usually applied once a day in the evening. A very thin layer is all that is needed but one must be consitant. Do not use this and go out in the sun as it will cause a rash
The second line is Benzoyl Peroxide Gel. If using Retin A , us the Benzoyal Peroxide in the morning.
Third, either oral or on the skin antiobiotics such as doxycycline, tetracycline. Oral is more effective but has more side effects.
There are many more treatments including Acutane for severe cases. Acutane is very dangerous for women of child bearing age and needs a dermatologist supervising treatment.
Please see a practitioner who is familiar with acne treatement. Many Family Practitioners or Pediatricians as well as Dermatologists can work with you.

I can only tell you from my experience with severe acne several years ago:
1) Proactiv became too harsh after a few weeks and I developed a red, puffy reaction to it. But I liked their sulfur mask, it really helped.
2) Murad (3-in-1) is a lot better and gentler.
3) Do not use Panoxybar. Just like Proactiv and most other acne products, it's very very very high in acid or alcohol and can make your face dry and sting very badly if you have acne. It's not just about nuking the zits, it's about healing the tunnels they create under your skin.
4) Don't squeeze or pick, the reason is that picking causes scarring, pain, and distress. Squeezing an acne allows it to spread bacteria in and under the surface of your skin, making more acne. Just because the acne isn't exploding on the outside (which you can wash off), doesn't mean it isn't exploding and spreading inside. If you're picking until you bleed (I did sometimes), that really goes against your goal of a clean face. Blood vessels can spread bacteria too.
5) A dermatologist helped clear my face, but that only lasted maybe under a year with prescription products.
6) Finally, I had to resort to an alternation of chemical peels and microdermabrasions at the MedSpa (now called Pure Spa). It took me nearly ten treatments, but ever since then my face is white, pure, and clean again. It's worth doing. Ask your loved ones to pitch in a few bucks to help with the bill.
7) The basis to most 3-in-1 treatments was that you: kill the acne with some chemical, you cleanse your face, and then you heal your face. Healing is really important, although at first I was really stressed out because of the acne...
8) Random other advice that I remember from my treatments/helpful people were: wash your pillowcase often to keep it clean for your face and neck at night. Avoid touching your face with your hands at all times (tough habit to break). Use COLD water to cleanse the acne, because cold water closes pores & stops inflammation, while HOT water opens them and invites more bacteria (this is professional advice, not mine). Don't eat/drink caffeine; substances that dehydrate you are bad for your skin. There is a technical explanation to this, it isn't superstition (also from a professional during my acne days).

NATURAL ACNE PROTOCOL
1/ Never, ever touch your face.
2/ Use 3 facecloths to wash your face, one to soap on, one to soap off with very hot water, one to rinse off with ice cold water, in that order, once a day.
3/ If you are under 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A once a day with a full meal
4/ If you are over 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A twice a day with a full meal.
Do not get pregnant while taking vitamin A. Do not take any more, like Accutane, it will stop you growing.
5/ Never, ever. pick, squeeze or pop your spot. Read number 1 again.
6/ Do this for 90 days.
7/ Invest in a brand new pillow and 2 new or more pillow cases to double bag' your pillow. HOT wash every couple of days.

A bit of advice given to me as a teenager, a bit of science as I am studying allergic reactions and vitamin A is a part of that. A bit of research: I sat in a lecture at the back and watched the acne prone pick at their faces, those with the worse acne touched their faces 32 times in an hour, the clearest complexions didn't touch their faces even once. I have circumstantial evidence that acne is the result of dermatophyte transfer from hands to face...where it does not get washed off and is well fed by hormones, sweat a
nd oil...just a hypothesis... But it would explain why vitamin A is so effective as vitamin causes skin to remove dermatophytes.
The secret is never to touch the spots
Tips on how to treat acne and achieve perfect clear skin in as little as 7 days?

The quick and easy way to get rid of black heads is to use nose stripes. Biore is a good brand for that. Try to exfoliate at least once a week and keep it as a routine. You will notice the result.
As for acne, don't try to squeeze or touch them as it will only make it worse. I usually dab some Avene Cleanance K when I start breaking out. It contains Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids.

Steam your face once a week for 3 to 4 minutes to open up the pores. Use a home made face scrub using the white of an egg and a little salt.More cheap and natural remedies for black and white heads at the link below.

Good OTC products are Oxy Face Wash, PanOxyl bar soap and Murad AHA/BHA Face Wash. You can try one of these and see if they help after about 7-10 days.
If OTC benzoyl peroxide products aren't working for you, then you need to see a dermatologist and get some appropriate prescriptions. (ex. Retin-A and some antibiotics The antibiotics will help prevent breakouts and the Retin-A will promote cell turnover.)
A good dermatologist will know what is best for you. It will be worth the effort to prevent scarring and stop wasting money on different over the counter products.

Hey Amber,
Get yourself some Apple Cider Vinegar (white vinegar will do if you have to) and put 2 capfulls into a bowl. Mix in 1 teaspoon baking soda and mix into a paste. Rub over your face with vinegar mix on cotton wool balls as you would a moisturizer. The baking soda is a mild abrasive and will aid cleansing. The vinegar is brilliant at reducing scars/marks/pimples/acne etc.
Wash off with a face washer and warm water. Then use a small amount of extra virgin cold pressed olive oil and smooth over your face as a moisturiser. Yep, the olive oil you cook with. Even if you already have oily skin, like me, just use a little bit. Everybody's skin needs a little bit of oil.
Do this morning and night and you will be amazed at the difference. Make sure you drink loads of filtered water, chlorine in the tap water supply leaches Vitamin E (amongst others) from your body !!! Vitamin E is vital for healthy skin. Just buy yourself a small water filter drink bottle or jug from any major chain store/supermarket. Try to eliminate sugar and white foods. Particularly white bread (my mum calls white bread butt glue !!), cakes, pastries, candy, chocolate, icecream. Its the sugar in these foods that ages us quicker and leaves the body starving out for proper nutrition. Try to eat wholegrains and cereals, fresh fruit and vegies, fish and lean meats, cut down on dairy, try soy milk or rice milk if normal cows milk upsets your tummy. Apparently 70% of our population are lactose intolerant and just don't know it!! Most people just think they have a sore tummy, a bit of constipation, runny nose, blocked sinuses, respiratory troubles, gassy tummies, wet farts, all are symptoms of lactose intolerance.............. Get lots of fresh air and sunshine and be nice to the most important dude in the world......... YOU.....
**** Forgot to mention to use the organic apple cider vinegar, Braggs is good***
PEACE
.............. :0)
