As said above, it removes old line from reel. Some models have a hook hone/sharpener feature included.
Be sure to dispose of old line properly. Please don't throw it into the lake.

Man, you need to focus on the sport, not the toys. If you can not figure out how to get that old line off that reel maybe you should find a mentor or a new sport.
Look, I do not intend to be mean spirited, but you should strive to be independent and read for yourself or discover for yourself some things.
Aw heck, you can do the same thing with a razor blade if you are careful with it.

Which you could do yourself. But it may be helpful if you have alot of reels to do at one time.
