Jesus addressed this issue in the Sermon on the Mount. He told us specifically not to pray, fast, or give to charity if it's only for show. He said that such people, who do religious acts only to be seen by people, already have their reward (that is, the notice of other people).

I say that if people are praising the Lord only so others will notice them and think they're superspiritual, then they are praising the Lord for the wrong reasons, and they aren't truly praising the Lord after all, but praising themselves.

When I was new to christianity I was uncomfortable lifting my hands in worship. I thought others would be staring at me. I guess there are folks that do it for the wrong reason. But I can't think of any. To praise the Lord just to show that one is "super spiritual" sounds kinda odd. I suppose that people "play church" but those types typically don't stay in the church for very long. God is a spirit and He wants us to worship Him in spirit and in truth, the bible says.

Today's reading for Ash Wednesday was about "hypocrites" who pray "so they can be seen."

However, we always have to be careful about questioning people's motives. Maybe the person praising the Lord is sincere, and feels it in his/her heart, and wants to say it out loud. That's OK. Don't judge. And when they say "praise the Lord" just say "Amen."

Funny how people get nervous to hear others praise the Lord, but don't bat an eye when His name is taken in vain.

God bless!

Hello,

I know how you feel. I get so sick and tired of people standing up given praise to God, just because they have an audiences. Its never about God, its always about glorifying them self and being seen.

I am dealing with an individual with this type of mentality as we speak, she is always bragging about what God has done for her and how great she is. Thank you for posting this question.

Nothing. Gods place to judge people not mine. He knows a persons true heart. The sad thing is that it can turn a non-christian away from God even further. It is sad. Besides how do we really know who those people are?

I pray for them and try not to judge them based on what I think. God looks on the heart all I can see is the outward appearance.

I think they are serious. They are in a state of spiritual euphoria, having the time of their life.
