Look at the Casio Exilim Hi-Zoom EX-V7, 7.2 Megapixel, 7x Optical/4x Digital Zoom.

It's not an 8X zoom, but going to an equivalent of 266 mm is pretty good. It is a 7X zoom, with a range of 38-266 mm. 7.1 MP. $400. This is a brand new camera and I know nothing about it. B&H Photo says that the expected arrival is sometime in March.

There are others with more zoom and more actual focal length, but when you say, "Slim," it rules out a lot...

See also, Panasonic DMC-TZ3 for $350, but not especially slim and not available yet, either.

Maybe the Nikon Coolpix S10 fits your requirements, but it's not amazingly slim, especially once you tilt the lens into position. It is on the market, at least, for $315.

the more the m-pixes the larger the file and the more difficult to e-mail a digi-photo --- 4.0 m-pixes is the best for the e-mail --- if you are planning to use the camera professionally that is another senario --- GO TO the camera store of your favorite and ask the dude at the counter to advise you and tell him/her the use you plan for the camera------------ THAT'S WHERE YOU will git the best recommendation and best pitcher box ------
