These answers are all wrong! Mental illnesses are illnesses of the brain. That's what they have in common. Mental illness is such a generic term for so many dozens of problems that it is about as useless as saying "physical illness" when someone asks you what you're sick with. That could be cancer, heart disease, the flu, restless legs, anything!! A mental illness is a physical illness, but they are not as well uderstood as other illnesses because the brain is so complicated. Once a so-called mental illness is understood, it gets moved over to neurology. Not all mental illnesses are genetic, not all cause behavioral disorders, etc.

Something can't be officially diagnosed as a mental illness unless the criteria of "causing significant distress or impairment" is met. That's the one symptom included in the diagnostic manual that every single mental illness has in common.

Fatigue, insomnia, mental confusion, nervousness, mood swings, faintness, headaches, depression, phobias, heart palpitations, a craving for sweets, cold hands and feet, forgetfulness, dizziness, blurred vision, inner trembling, outbursts of temper, sudden hunger , allergies, crying spells are signs of a bad diet.

They are very different disorders, but all have a genetic component that contribute to their symptoms.
