modern Muslim leaders all come from backward countries, hence they are not really modern leaders at all.

Islam doesn't work, it is the very reason the Muslim left their Islamic country in the first place. However, guilt makes them carry on their beliefs. You only have to look at all the predominantly Muslim areas in the UK to see what a state they are in.

a mundane state. A theocracy could be adverse, there could be battling over which faith is in power. An atheist state might ban freedom of religion, some thing i do no longer trust (an i'm an agnostic atheist). a mundane state could be great, like now we've. the only concern is diverse communities thinking they should get specific treatment.

Probably a passing phase. I don't think you can become an atheist, you either believe or not. He's obviously searching for the truth. I hope he will continue to search until he finds. Perhaps you and he could pray to find the truth. After all neither of you have anything to lose, have you?

He sounds great maybe he should stay a Muslim before others turn it into a vile wicked faith and spread his word of peace. Tell him he is what is needed to help peace and unity between different cultures

I'm not sure that it's possible to become an atheist by simply choosing to. Surely he would already be one if he didn't believe in God.
Anyway, atheism is a reasonable attitude to take, you should support him.

You cannot be Muslim by name. If he does not believe in the teachings of that particular religion, then he is not a muslim

Of course. It certainly is more rewarding than believing in
a bloodthirsty tyrant called Allah who declares "unbelievers
will not be tolerated."

Quote

The Taliban, under the direction of Mullah Muhammad Omar, brought about this order through the institution of a very strict interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic law. Public executions and punishments (such as floggings) became regular events at Afghan soccer stadiums. Frivolous activities, like kite-flying, were outlawed. In order to root out "non-Islamic" influence, television, music, and the Internet were banned. Men were required to wear beards, and subjected to beatings if they didn't.

Most shocking to the West was the Taliban's treatment of women. When the Taliban took Kabul, they immediately forbade girls to go to school. Moreover, women were barred from working outside the home, precipitating a crisis in healthcare and education. Women were also prohibited from leaving their home without a male relative—those that did so risked being beaten, even shot, by officers of the "ministry for the protection of virtue and prevention of vice." A woman caught wearing fingernail polish may have had her fingertips chopped off. All this, according to the Taliban, was to safeguard women and their honor.
