Boy? Just a guess. You don't need to defend yourself, that's just the way early elementary kids are.
I have an eight year old boy and I know what you're talking about. Figure out what type of learner he is, and you can do just about anything.
My son responds well to manipulatives and highly visual things.
Anything hands on seems to work well with boys. Not so much talking games, that does not hold their attention, but "doing games" or "putting together" games work well.
He likes dominoes (Mexican train is his favorite) checkers, marbles, card games (go fish, slap jack) tic tac toe, easy puzzles. Chess is excellent because the better you get, the harder it is.
I can keep him intrigued for what seems like forever with a simple rock paper scissors war too!
for quieter times, reading and coloring work well, and for working alone times, he will sit for hours and play with legos.
The key is to start small, then work your way up to longer times, or more involved rules, so on.

Well, one of the things that I always did was to remember to have a variety of different activities to do. Most kids even those with short attention spans can be mesmerizied by the right disney movie. However, you want to give him some other activities too.
Here's what I'd do:
1. Outdoor interactive activity - get his energy out
2. A walk to a restuarant he likes for dinner
3. Play a board game that he enjoys
4. Work a puzzle
5. Watch a Disney movie

The best way to develop attention span is to provide a child with something that totally grabs their interest. For a 7yo, it might be creating a volcano out of clay or doing a puzzle or even polishing pots with a special scrub. Completely depends on the child.

Puzzles, because you need lots of concentration to do one of those.
