No verbal response is necessary.
A spiritual response is required all through Lent.
+ Ashes in the Bible +
"O daughter of my people, gird on sackcloth, roll in the ashes." (Jeremiah 6:26)
"I turned to the Lord God, pleading in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes." (Daniel 9:3)
"When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes." (Jonah 3:6)
"And all the Israelite men, women and children who lived in Jerusalem prostrated themselves in front of the temple building, with ashes strewn on their heads, displaying their sackcloth covering before the Lord." (Judith 4:11; see also 4:15 and 9:1)
"That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their clothes." (1 Maccabees 3:47; see also 4:39)
Jesus refers to the use of sackcloth and ashes as signs of repentance: "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes." (Matthew 11:21, Luke 10:13)
+ Ash Wednesday +
As the beginning of Lent, Ash Wednesday calls us to the conversion journey that marks the season.
As those preparing to join the Church enter the final stage of their preparation for the Easter sacraments, we are all called to walk with them so that we will be prepared to renew our baptismal promises when Easter arrives.
When we receive ashes on our foreheads, we remember:
+ Who we are
+ That we are creatures of the earth
. "Remember that you are dust"
+ That we are mortal beings
. "and to dust you will return"
+ That we are baptized
+ That we are people on a journey of conversion
. "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel"
+ That we are members of the body of Christ
+ That smudge on our foreheads will proclaim that identity to others, too
With love in Christ.

I'm sorry but I can't find Ash Wednesday in the Holy Scriptures, what book are they getting this stuff from? Makes you wonder huh?
Isa 8:20 To the law and to the prophecy: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
I'll stick with the 613 Laws found in the Holy Scripture.
Cain tried a different way and look what it got him? Do you think that the world is going the way of Cain?

the day only before this...it rather is unusual via fact ash Wednesday became this previous Wednesday no longer the day only before this. anyhow all it definitely is, is while the hands from final years palm Sunday are burned and the priest will smear the ashes on our brow contained in this variety of a pass symbolizing us beginning over...or increasing from the ashes. it rather is kinda like a clean beginning up and we try to do some thing advantageous for lent as a devotion to Christ. it is likewise the 1st day of lent the place we remember Jesus strolling contained in direction of the desolate tract for 40 days/nights. i'm catholic and went to catholic faculties all my existence so I definitely have had to flow with the aid of a impressive style of ash Wednesdays so with a bit of luck this enables and my time wasn't wasted too lots there.

nope, you only have to listen a nd walk away humbly.
they will say either something about living the gospel or the from ashes you came to ashes you shall return. reminding us that is it not the body that lives the life but the spirit that lives within the body.

sometimes i do the sign of the cross, but nothing at all is typical. and to all those who ask why we do ashes when not in the Bible....THERE"S A LOT OF TRADITIONS NOT IN THE BIBLE THAT WE ALL FOLLOW, DUMMIES!! DO YOU PUT UP CHRISTMAS TREES? DO YOU PUT UP CROSSES IN YOUR CHURCH? DO YOU HAVE EASTER BASKETS AND EGG HUNTS FOR THE KIDDIES? BE REAL. WAYS OF WORSHIP AND CELBRATING AND AND REMEMBERING HAVE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS. WHO A RE YOU TO DECIDE WHICH WAYS ARE VALID?

There is no rule. Most are quiet and say or do nothing. However, saying or doing any of the above is appropriate if you want to.
I was raised Catholic and now am Lutheran so I can speak to those only.

Usually you don't say or do anything in reply, but if that just feels odd to you, "Amen" (meaning, "I believe - let it be") is a perfect response.

Sounds like some heathenistic ritual you would find in some ancient tribal culture. Your religion actually does that? Wow. what gods do you worship as well?

Well, its not in the bible.
One of those Catholic traditions made by men.
Who you follow so, I guess you can do whatever they want you to do.
