Go visit the girl in the town, and meet some of her friends from the school.
Invite her out prior to the prom to ease your mind.
Most of all--- YOU just relax and have fun!!

GO out with her and some of her friends in her town first to feel more comfortable and to establish some kind of connections with everyone. That way when you go to the Prom you will know some people. She will probably be thrilled if you ask her if you can hang with her and some of her friends after school or something.
*Also, be confident around her and her friends. People like confident people (but not egotistical). Even if you are not confident FAKE IT! It works and everyone will find you more attractive.

If you've never been to her school, town or home, then it is NOT a good idea. Cause, you don't know enough about her and that's not a good way to start a relationship! But if you think I'm a total "weirdo", then you can go for it, but I wouldn't.
