I'm not trying to diss it or anything. I can see why it is fun to watch.
Like the Daytona this last week. That was cool. But I don't get how and why NASCAR is a sport. They aren't doing anything sport-like.
sorry not just NASCAR but anytime of car racing I don't get how it's a sport.
Not saying it's not cool just asking why it's a sport

sport [spawrt, spohrt] –noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

While NASCAR may not be the most physcially demanding type of auto racing in terms of athletic requirement (Formula 1 and various Sports Car classes that are involved in Endurance Races would rank tops here), there is still a requirement of skill, precision, and physical ability involved. Driving a car at it's limits is not at all like similar driving on the street, which is probably the key reason many people seem to think that the skills involved or ordinary or easy. Simply keeping a car balanced and in control, while at the limits of it's grip is tough. Doing so while driving and manuevering with other competitors is tougher still.

Autoracing can require great physical endurance, competing in layers of fireproof clothing in cockpits where the temperature often is well in excess of 100 degree F. And doing this for hours, while having to stay 100% focused and alert. Providing the correct amount of steering/throttle/brake input can require careful control (and in some cases where the rules do not allow for power assistance, quite a bit of strength!). Yes, the athletic requirement in NASCAR is less than some other forms of auto racing, but it is there, and is very real.

So, there is a definite athletic element, and there is competition. It meets the definition of a sport.

I feel NASCAR is considered a sport due to the fact that it takes a lot of strength and conditioning to muscle around a high-horse powered vehicle for 3 hrs. of a race, with usually very small amounts of rest time (pit stops of 20 secs. a few times a race). Another reason is that there is a team involved in NASCAR, its not just the driver, so anything that involves teamwork should be considered a sport.

Well, Im not a nascar fan but I do respect the sport. did you know more people watch nascar than any other sport in the world....$$$$that means its the highest paying sport in the world. Also, next time you take a 6 hour trip somewhere, think of that nascar driver, going 190 miles an hour, 3 inches behind the car in front of them, without a restroom break, or a stop bc your butt has gone numb. Think of how much concentration goes into this sport although they are just driving in circles....I cant watch it either bc its boring, but I do respect them. Hell u can die really fast at this sport if u make a mistake!

here are some reasons:
try roasting for couple of hours in bout 100 degree weather
try kepping a car off the wall at 200
now try keeping a car off the wall at 200 when the power steering suddenly goes out
try to keep your timing in turns the same for couple of hours
try changing fours tires, clean a windshield, fill up with fuel, clean the grill off, make any changes to the suspension in 5 minutes. cant do it but the nascar teams can do all of that in bout 13 seconds.
try to stay calm when you see a 3500 pound car coming at you at 55 mph.
then try to sttay calm whne the car does not get the right entry into the pit box and is sliding at you.

A sport is defined as an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc., whether people like it or not. In a statistical survey, NASCAR is the most watched televised SPORT.

Why is golf, bowling, cricket, horse racing, curling, darts, or spelling bees considered sports? They show all of these on ESPN. You have to admit that if it's the #2 sporting event in the country than it's doing something right.

Nascar is a sport. These drivers, work out and stay in shape. Try doing 500 laps around a track, and then tell me it isn't a sport.
