the alternator is in the front or the back of the motor?

No, but your clock position will be off. The clock position is where the wiring terminal connector is located on the housing compared to the mounting points. If the alt. is mounted on the front, with the terminals on the front side, when you install it on the back of the engine, the wiring will be jammed against the block. The Alternators are the same, but you have to change the clock position. Carefully remove the 4 torks head screws that hold the rear housing to the front and carefully rotate the back half 180 deg. If it is difficult to rotate, pry up slightly with a screwdriver between the steel ring and the front part of the housing. Do not pull the alt. apart. Pry it up just enough to loosen it to ease rotation. Reinstall the screws and mount it up.

By front and back, I am assuming you are standing in front and looking towards the firewall on a sidewinder motor. The mounting bolt hole ears are different, even though the alternator is the same.

How can an altenator be in the back of the motor? How would the belt attach?
