My cat started this at age 17 and a half. Since her old age is making her lose her manners in the bathroom department, I put down a plastic pad (like my computer chair rolls on) in her target spot - much easier clean-up than carpet! She often has blood in her urine - my vet says her kidneys are failing & as long as she's not in pain, she's happy and eating, he won't bring up putting her to sleep.

Urinary tract infections are painful for your kitty (can feel like a hot poker when she urinates). They can be difficult and expensive to treat and can reoccur frequently if the cause is not found. Just because she will seem better for a couple weeks doesn't mean she isn't still having a problem.
Has your vet done a urinalysis to find the cause? Is it truly an infection (caused by bacteria) or is it cystitis (bladder inflammation)? Has your cat's diet been adjusted to help stop the formation of painful crystals? Some cats will have frequent re -occurrences no matter what you do (this is called idiopathic cystitis- as in cause unknown).
Please see your vet again and talk about your options. Do not leave her to suffer.

DO NOT PUT HER TO SLEEP.Cats live up to 25 or 30 yrs.You have to get the smell out of the carpet. Use vinegar and water. Plus u need to take the cat to the vet at least once a yr for her or his shots.Good luck

It is so hard to make that choice but she lived a very full life. It sounds like she is having a very hard time with arthritis and not be able to get to the litter box fast enough. I would have to say yes put her down. I am very sorry. My cat had the same problem. If you notice that the cat isnt running or walking as it used to then it must be suffereing and the best thing to do is shut her down. but if you dont want to shut her down then just try as hard as you can to keep her alive because 16 years is a very long time.
good luck

what ever you do...dont get angered with the cat..i know its hard to do because of that nasty smell but your poor kitty is really old, and well lets be honest might be on her way out...you want to always look back on these last days and know you did what you could to make her final days the most comfortable...
i suggest you go back to your vet...

She could have another urinary tract infection or worse stones or a tumor or even possibly kidney failure. I would definitely take your cat back to the vet to get it diagnosed properly

Sounds like she's just getting old, and maybe feeling a little too tired to make it to the litter box.
