I don't have a driving license so I don't own a car or can rent one. Have any one been to Lake District by public transportation before?

You can get there by bus and train. If travelling by bus your best option would be with National Express http://www.nationalexpress.com/ which operates regular services between London and the Lake District. The coaches stop at many of the towns in the Lake District, full list of destinations is here... http://www.nationalexpress.com/destinations/index.cfm

The Lake District itself isn't particularly well served by trains. There are lines that run right around the Lake District but the only one within the Lakes terminates at Windermere. Your best option is to take the West Coast Main Line from Euston and get off at Oxenholme then catch the train to Windermere.

You could alternatively travel to Leeds then take the Settle to Carlisle line to Carlisle (although it's called Settle - Carlisle the trains start from Leeds / Bradford).

Check this site for train details... http://nationalrail.co.uk/index.html

Due to an accident a couple of days ago the West Coast Main Line is closed and will be for a few days. There is currently no service between Lancaster and Carlisle. Check the above site for updates.

I agree with what most people have said but I want to add a couple suggestions. Booking in advance will most likely save you A LOT of money instead of purchasing the ticket the day of (sometimes as much as 10x the amount). Also, sometimes buying two singles are cheaper than buying a return so worth looking into that and the time you travel can make a difference too. HOWEVER, if you do buy advance tickets at a discount, then you HAVE to go on the train and time specified or the conductor will make you either pay the full (expensive) fare or make you get off at the next stop. I've learned from experience! Good luck and enjoy Windemere, it's gorgeous!

National Express could take you to Wales and then you could take local buses to the place where you would like to go.

Or there is the train from Kings Cross or Paddington to Wales and then local buses.
