An excellent, and free, source of information on the history of photography can be found at the link listed belows. It is in podcast form and you can download the shows and listen/watch them on your computer. It is like getting a college course on photography for free.

The origins of black & white photography are the same as the origins of photography. Basically it goes back to the mid-1800's.
