What would you suggest?

I listen mostly to rap so solid clean hitting subs are a must.

If I was building a system with $300, I would start with a head unit for about $200 and coaxils for $100. If you are insistant on getting something for the trunk, go with 1 (one) good quality sub for about $125 and an amp for about $175. With buying only one sub right now, you can add another sub of the same model when you get more green. MTX mono block amp, and a 12" JL sub (4 ohm) in the price ranges stated earlier, is what I would go with. Don't go with cheap products that promise the sun, but gives you a flashlight. Buy good quality components!

I'd take my $300 to a casino and play Texas Hold 'Em. Seriously, though I'd buy a decent head unit and quality mid range 3-way's to replace the factory speakers. You will need a lot more than $300 for subs, amps, &EQ's and they can all be added later.

I wish I was young enough to spend money on car stereos again.

Start with some Pioneer 3,4,5 way speakers. A Pioneer Head Unit too. Then save up some money and work your way to a decent amp(s) and then to some subs. I'd say get some Kicker Comp subs if you were going to get subs. They are pretty cheap and sound pretty decent.
