A general rule of thumb is that if you're popping the joints by moving them in their normal direction, that's okay, but if you're moving them in other directions that they don't normally go in, you could damage the ligaments that hold the joint together. As an example, if you pop your knuckles by bending your fingers in towards your palm, this is the normal direction they move, and is probably fine, but if you pop them by bending them backwards towards the back of your hand, or by pulling them, this could loosen the joint. Loose joints can eventually lead to arthritis or other inflammatory problems.

I have never been able to pop my neck, but I used to pop my knuckles and shoulders and YES, I do have pains in my shoulders now, I am late 30s. But my fingers do not hurt, but my knuckles are big and ugly...so if you can stop...please trust me.

I do that a lot too. Some people say it can cause your fingers to be big, and it can cause arthritis. After a while, your fingers might start hurting, while moving your fingers, or typing. My neck hurts a lot now & my fingers. Be careful! (It is a hard habit to break though)

I'm on the other side of the coin. I have been doing both off and on for 40 years without any ill effects.
