My son was urinating blood after a head laceration of unknown origns at school. (all kids involved had memory loss as well, can't remeber what happened , afraid) Lab results came back 1) creat 0.5%
2). Neut 54.4
3)Mono9.7
4)protien 30
5)blood large
Ct showed only free fluid in the right pelvis.
All numbers above where abnormal...including WBCs,RBCs,Epithelial cells.
Anything above really worrisome? Blood discontinued 5 hours later...but insurance Co. said this was non emergency even thought they called in the urologist as well. Would a 6 yr old peeing "gross" amounts of blood 5 hrs after an unknown head injuty be considered emerency? To me it was...thanks for the help.

A head laceration does not cause blood to show up in urine. Does your kid complain of any back, abdominal, or pelvic pain? It sounds like there is also some sort of trauma to your kid other than the head laceration. I highly suspect he was struck in the groin/pelvic/back area which can very well cause blood in the urine. Blood in the urine associated with trauma is very suspicious for kidney, ureter, or bladder trauma. I would need more history about your kid's condition to further help you, but I will try to explain his lab values to help you. I'm assuming 1-4 refer to serum labs and 5 refers to urinalysis.
1. creatinine is a great indicator of kidney function. normal values are less than 1.2. b/c your kid's value is normal, it is safe to say his kidneys are doing fine. this being said, trauma could cause an acute bleed without having any chronic effect on his kidneys.
2 & 3. these are both WBC that can be tested to see if there is an infection in the body. The neutrophil level is normal and the mono level is very slightly elevated. These results are irrelevant to the blood in his urine.
4. protein - should never be found in the urine. if so, kidney damage should be suspected.
5. large blood - here I am assuming u mean large amts of blood in his urine. This is not indicative of any cause, but only reaffirms what you knew before going to the doctor.

I suggest getting a followup Ultrasound of your kid's abdomen/pelvic area to rule out any kidney/bladder/ureter damage.

hope this helps!

Which of these lab tests were done on blood and which were done on urine? I'm pretty sure (5) was done on urine.

I would be worried about a child peeing blood and who has a CT showing "free fluid" in the R pelvis because I would suspect trauma to the abdomen or R flank. I would be concerned that there was something lacerated in his urinary system - kidney, ureter or bladder and that the free fluid could be urine or blood.

Have your Dr. explain the results to you
