My friend said that he went to a dentist and that they asked him why he had his tooth drilled and filled when he had no cavity. My question is, if they drilled it and filled it already how did the other dentist know there was no cavity there to begin with?

Dentists take dental x-rays and the cavities show up on those. They normally do it before they drill your teeth because this shows the cavities there. That's how they tell WHERE to drill. Perhaps the other dentist could see there was no cavity on the x-ray in the spot where the filling is.

The x-rays they take show the decay from the cavity, and even though the hole had been filled with an x-ray you can tell. There become darker areas inside the tooth from where the decay would have ate away at the bone. It's hard for some to see with an untrained eye, but the dentist should be able to show x-rays of your friend's healthy teeth compaired to a tooth that once had been filled to repair cavity damage.
