I found these amounts in an old cook book and no explanation given..

well...
1 pint = 2 cups
1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups

That should work since it's all a volumetric measurement.

There are 2 cups in a pint, and 2 pints in a quart (4 cups in a quart).

The best way to measure flour is to weight it. 5 oz. per cup. This will give you the most consistant measurement, as flour volume changes as the humidity changes.

actually, 1 pint = 2.4 cups.
