Not knowing hat your desk is, it is hard to say.

If it is wood, then in all likilhood it no longer resperates, consumes, reporduces, or excretes and thus from that difinition would not be considered "alive".

Yes, matter is dead always. Alive means, consciousness, you are alive, you are conscious, as soon you die, no more conscious, you will stop speaking.
