My fiance and I just bought our first house and are trying to decide on a refrigerator. We measured and we have 70" H and 38" W to work with. I'm looking at a 20.5 cubic foot fridge that is 66.5" H and 29.5" W. My fiance thinks that over 8 (about 4 on each side) inches is going to be too much extra space and look weird (plus the few inches at the top). He thinks we need something that is at least 32-33" wide so that there are only 2-3 inches on each side.

Opinions?

even if you do get the narrow one you can purchase or build a mobile rack that can slide between the fridge and the wall,, these hold spices, boxes or bottles etc,,, they have some of all heights

Here's the simplest thing to check: on many models, there is a wire arm that rotates up after ice cubes are made and released, and then rotates down slowly as the tray is refilled with water. The purpose of the arm is to detect a full ice container and stop the ice making process in that event. If this arm gets moved to the top position, no ice cubes are made. If something impedes its motion, no ice cubes are made. So make sure neither of these situations exists.

2-3" should be good. However make sure there is enough room for the doors to open and close. But, the people at the place you are buying from can help with that

If you can reach and get something from the side, it's too much. After all, you need just enough space to lose things and not be able to get it. That's what kitchen appliances are for :-)

The height is not as critical as the width (for appearance). I'm with hubby there, get the widebody... go big or go home...
