The problem is that the bars around here just don't cater to the people who want them. I'd be thrilled to have a clean pub and watering hole to go to. But, the only ones are either attached to restaurants or are 5hitholes. I'm not comfortable going into a bud swillin yahoo bar and sometimes I don't want to go and deal with nanna & pops getting dinner in the bar because all the tables are full. I just want to have a GOOD beer, watch a game, and relax.

Yep. Beer is too expensive to drink in pubs and we have taken to getting beer in and having friends round at the weekend. We play poker, games etc and have a right laugh. It's cosy, private and cheap and only once in a while do we all throw our car keys into a big tub...

My area doesn't have a lot of pubs/bars... the City of Roseville makes it damn near impossible for anyone witth a liquor license to do business here. You can get beer or wine lots of places, but for mixed drinks... well it's hard to come by. Those who do serve are doing well.

Since they have banned smoking all the pub or bar parking lots are empty these days. Blame all those do-gooders when these owners go bankrupt.

Evidence is contradictory in terms of the way smoking bans affect business of bars. I would visit bars more frequently if I knew there was no smoking. And no, pubs aren't dying in my area.

Yes, fortunately, they are!
Now that smokers have to be three metres from an enclosed environment to light up, the pubs, RSL's and clubs are thinning out.

Some closed after the smoking ban. Some thrived because they thought ahead to enhance the bar experience; better entertainment, cleaner environment, etc.
