Technically you are always supposed to address envelopes with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shmoe, no matter what the contents. I would definitely do it the same way as the wedding invitations. Think about the purpose of what you are doing. If the whole family is going to be invited, then they need to know that so the whole family saves the date. But it is poor form to write "and family" or "and guest". These people have names.

Does this "save the date" mailing precede the actual invitation? I'm not in favor of that -- very tacky. Why not just mail the invitations themselves well enough in advance so the people you love and want to be there can plan accordingly?
Good luck!

it'll make it more of a personal touch, but if you don't have good handwriting and can take the time to make address labels, then I don't see why you shouldn't use labels
