No, you take it, have it towed however to the garage/dealership/body shop, get an estimate, turn it into the insurance company and hopefully get a check for repair.

Could you even begin to make the repairs?

If the insurance company "totalled" your vehicle,and you chose to drive it and not make the necessary repairs and get the required vehicle inspection,you would be ticketed for driving an unsafe vehicle. If the damage was minor,say the right front fender,but the lights still work and all,then no,you can use the money for whatever,you'll just be driving around with a dent in your car.

Unless there is a legal owner like a bank that has an interest in seeing it repaired, you can do as you please with the money. But if you have another accident, even in the exact same place, they won't pay for it a second time if you didn't get it fixed the first time.

no. but more than likely the ins co will know. ins co's write estimates on the bear minimun that they can see. 9/10 claims need more repaired what was origionally written up called a sublet repair.
