My cat begs for more food when his bowl is still 1/4 full- he loves it when I add more- does that mean it is more fresh? Or maybe he smells my other cat on the food? He also leaves a small toy in the bowl- maybe to claim the food for himself?

My cat does the exact same thing!!!!!!

I think it gets stale if it left out too long, so I try to put in less and fill it up more. He eats it all now.

And he always leaves a toy in the bowl when it is stale

Cats get picky about almost everything. Usually they get over it eventually and move on to being picky about something else.

That said, can you tell the difference in smell when you first put the food in the bowl vs. when it's been sitting out? Your cat has a much better sense of smell, and probably likes the fresh smell best.

My cat also leaves her toys in her food bowl, consistently, even if I scatter them around the house. She thinks they 'belong' there, maybe because cats associate the food and the play-hunting behavior they use with their toys.

Why are you so set on feeding it this Blue? There are other foods out there. Wellness Core is a dry food. About $20 a bag, tho. My cats eat it. But if she is happy eating Purina why switch? Just some advice from experience: next time you have the cat at the vet have him take blood and check kidney levels. Dry food is hard on the kidneys. I had a cat who just passed away and barfed at least once a week for the four years I had her. I found out too late that she had bad kidneys. Had I known about it early on, I could have given her a different food to combat that. Cats with kidney problems tend to throw up a lot because their stomach produces more acid than normal.

Hi, I have 2 cats too/brother-sister/, by now they are 8 years old.First and most importantly, when you buy dry pet food, always check the expiry date, what should be at least couple of month ahead of your purchasing date.Buy good quality food /as Iam with hairball controll or Science diet/ and you can try some soft canned food too in an other double feeder /as Friskies Turkey and cheese-it has a tasty gravy which they like very much/.The double feeder for soft food must be more flat, as they can reach easier the food. You have to wash daily with soap and water the dish before you give the fresh canned food them.Yes, they like if the dry food is filled up daily, you can even buy some Temptation, what is a kind of yummy delicacy for them, outside crunchy, inside soft, and just sprinkle over the top of their dry food.Weekly you need to wash their dry food dishes too, because from dust to cat hair everything is falling there, and cats are extremely clean animals.Don't forget to wash daily their water bowl, because they need fresh water every day from clean dish.I use clay dish, because it keeps fresh and cold longer /summer time I even put an ice cube to their water/ and they like it.When they eat, they eat comfortably from the double dish, but with the cann food the situation is different.Sassy, the girl starts to eat first, because she is the first in the rank. They even like a little bit of human food, like some little pieces of smoked turkey breast, or light mortadella. The boy is different, because he likes canned tuna flakes or the crust of a pizza. If he smells in the air the smell of the pizza he is coming to get some morsels, and he is satisfied. They are healthy, even they are spoiled a bit. They don't leave any toy in their bowl, but if they want something they are around me all the time and I can hardly do a step because they are under my feet./usually they want more Temptation /the yellow bag, chicken flavour/.Take care

Well yeah, cats are extremely picky. But mainly they have a very strong sense of smell, so they'll be able to sense food going bad way before we can. So, probably he just wants fresher food. Try smaller servings to see if he finishes it.
My cat used to leave a toy inside her bowl too, I don't have another cat, I always thought maybe she thought it was her baby and was trying to feed it.

Cats have different personalities, I have one cat that you must change her food twice a day or she wont eat it, were the other two arent so picky. But cats like when the food bowl is fool because they dont need to stick there face in the bowl and get it dirty.

Do you feed the cats from the same bowl? If so, then one of your cats is jealous of the other and mean. sorry to say that. what i mean by that is since your cat eat from the top or 1/4 of the bowl he/she eats it that way so, your other cat can have all the leftovers.
