Many. I can't give you an exact figure however it's not a requirement that they speak English in order to obtain a green card.

I tried looking that figure up for you. Failed. Sorry. As an author, I have to deal with vocabulary lists that get simpler and simpler every year. Long ago, I could write at the eight grade level. Then, the readership vocabulary levels went down to fifth grade. I am writing barely at third grade vocabulary levels now. The question should be, how many AMERICANS do not speak English, at least moderately? : )

Lots of legal immigrants cannot speak proper English if they came here as adults. But they usually make sure that english is the first language for their kids.

You have to speak English to be a citizen and you have to pass a test.

Legal immigrants, too many don't speak English but they should!

I don't know if this helps at all but I did find this.

"The language problem has become so intense in New York City schools that authorities were forced to open a special school for immigrant children in Queens. In San Francisco, where fully one-third of all public school students are enrolled in "limited English" programs, a Newcomer High School was opened especially for the children of immigrants."

It seems that if the children don't speak English its a pretty good chance that the parents don't either.Interesting question.

Literacy rate: 95% to 99%. this was from the last US Census....I too, can see the "dumbing down " of this country. We seem to be sliding backward instead of getting our children ready for the future. We must as parents, stress education and see that our children follow through. Its time to be your child's parent, not their friend.

I agree with cpacheco.
Too many Yahoo members haven't a clue how to spell or use proper grammar.
And these are Americans who were born here and educated in public schools.

Back to your question - I was hard-pressed to find statistics.
I doubt there are any that address your question.

Let me turn this around, though.
How many native-born Americans speak native-American languages?

After all - unless YOU were from one of the original native American tribes, then YOU are an immigrant or a descendant of an immigrant.

Get my point?

Any English-only proposal is an insult to the real Americans, let alone an insult to our immigrant parents who came from all over the world.

Presumably a bunch, since there is a special provision of the citizenship law that says if you are of 'advanced age' and have liverd here a certain length of time as a permanent resident, you can take the citizenship test in your native tongue.

Do I think it's a good idea to not speak the language of a country you immigrate to?

No.

But for old folks who aren't at work or school every day, it can be tough.

It is my understanding that the United States ranks the lowests scores in English (and that's including natural born citizens)
