He is 12, and often has questions... this one I could not answer; A young lady was pulled over, the office said have you been smoking marajuana... she denied, as they all do, but then he asked he to step out of the car... he had her close her eyes and put her head back... then after looking up her nose.. he said you are lying to me, I know that you were smoking pot.... My question, why did he look up her nose? What was he looking for, I thought pot was smoked, not snorted... what am I missing?

Quickly, we were not watching cops for the educational value... I was watching nancy grace when the show ended, and cops came on... additionally, He didn't ask her to put her arms out to test balance.... I at first thought that was what he was doing... but I am pretty sure he was looking up her nose... does marajuana cause your nose to run? could be just me....

I'm not sure without seeing the episode.
A lot of times things are edited from that series. it makes cops look like they don't know what they are doing sometimes by not following procedure. Such as Miranda. It only has to be read before questioning that may incriminate them. However they don't always show the officer giving the Miranda rights before asking incriminating questions.
As far as what he was looking for up the nose I do not know. If he was to look in the mouth yes. Smoking Marijuana raises the taste buds on the tongue and turns the tongue an yellow green color. Also had he checked the eyes with his finger doing a test to check for non convergence which is another good sign for Marijuana use I would say yes, but as far as I know there is no way to determin Marijuana usage by looking up the nose.
He may have also just been playing her. We do hat sometimes. He may have smelled the odor of Marijuana in the car. It's an undeniable odor, had he step out, make her think he checked for something to show signs of Marijuana use in attempt to get her to fess up.
If there are other Officers Answering this question please let me know if there is a way to check for usage by looking up the nose.

Most likely the office was looking for some other form of physical evidence. He may have appeared to be looking up her nose, but was looking for something else. Also, police are allowed to essentailly lie to suspects they are questioning. Let me explain. The officer comes up and smells the overwhelming scent of marajuana, its quite unmistakable. He asks the subject if they are smoking marajuana to which they say "No." The officer "nose" they are lying asks them out to perform a "test". This test is a ruse just to trick the subject into believeing the officer knows something they do not. The officer states "I Know your lying, cause marajuana causes the inside of your nose to turn red." The subject already under the influence is not sure if the officer is telling the truth and is trained to see recognize these "signs" and confesses to smoking marajuana at that point afraid they they failed this "test" and the officer will simply arrest them anyway

Smoking marijuana is like drinking beer. Marijuana is a Central Nervous System depressant with actions that interact with the body like that of beer!
If the officer asked the suspect to tilt their head back and raise their arms to the side...this is just one of numerous sobriety tests used by law enforcement.
Marijuana, with it's "THC" or TetraHydraCannabinol, can be smoked or made in to a liquid form called "hash oil" which can be smoked with a few cases of reported injection. The injection is NOT the norm however.
I applaud your effort to see how law enforcement works but remember...the show "Cops" is just segments of only the most exciting parts of a shift. Additionally, it neglects to show the less sensational moments where officers change tires, assist stranded motorists, or provide other less dramatic assistance to the public.
There is another website that can provide you with fairly up to date drug information and has been included below.
Best wishes!

I agree with others, the office was probably looking at her eyes.....
I love cops.....reminds me just how stupid petty felons can be....big, bad, ganstas who cry like a baby and squeal like a girl when they get taken down...Love it!!
Another secret pleasure is "Juvies" on MTV....Nothing like watching Mr. or Ms. Cool 15 year old, coming in with all that attitude and tough demeanor.....think they are so streetwise and know-it-all... HA! One night in the pokey and they start sniveling for Mama.........

I believe it more of a question of balance more than looking up her nose. when you close your eyes and tilt your head back this comprimises your balance thus giving the police the right to question you sobriety. So he wasnt looking up her nose for anything.

In my experience, the officer was looking at her pupils, and for that glazed stare, and believe me, there is a certain glaze stare all marijuana users have. And an experienced cop can tell what drug goes with which glare and colors and pupil size..

He was not looking up her nose, he was watching to see if her body was spinning in a clockwise direction. If you are not under the influence, it normally spins in a counterclockwise direction. Weird huh
