There are many reasons your cat may be losing patches of hair. Is he itchy? If he is itchy, that is one thing. If he is not itchy, and losing his hair, I would be more concerned. The possibilities include:
1) fleas (including flea allergy)
2) allergies to the environment or food
3) skin infection (bacterial, fungal, mites, other)
4) metabolic disease (i.e. related to liver issues, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, etc)
5) skin cancer
There are other causes as well, these are just a few. You really should schedule an appointment with your kitty's vet so he/she can check him out, do some tests, and let you know what they think the problem is.

I'd have the vet check him for a fungus -- particularly ringworm (which is a fungus that humans can catch from their cats). More typically, the fungus creates bare spots, but it's worth making sure he doesn't have it. If the bare spots are between his ears and eyes, that's just genetic.
Other possibilities include overgrooming (he's licking himself so much in certain spots that the hair is coming out), which may be related to flea bites, allergies (including food sensitivities), or just plain stress.

He may have picked up some sort of mange, or he may have Feline Eczima (sp?). Your best bet would be to take him to the vet...it may not be anything serious.
