my yorkie has a clump of what looks like a dry booger. :) it has been there for 5 months and I asked the vet when we were in and she said some dogs just have an incredibly dry and scaley nose.
if your dog doesn't have other health problems, it is probably something to just watch out for... if they seem dehydrated or sick, err on the side of caution and take your pup in for a quick checkup.

Dry is normal, a dog's nose is always dry unless it's just licked it, nosed around in wet grass or snow, or is particularly sloppy while drinking. It is a MYTH that a dry nose is a sign of illness. Crusty, though? That's different. Is it crusty like dried mucus/snot, or scabbed? If this is the case, it's time for a trip to the vet. [Add] A dog's nose does not secret liquid, oil, or mucus that keeps it cool and moist. The nose is leathery and usually dry. That is NORMAL. A dry nose does not indicate ANYTHING.

RE:
My dog has a dry and crusty nose.?
My dog has a very dry nose. It is crusty and almost scaly. It also looks as though he has some mucus that clumps up on the outside. I am just looking for some ideas. I do plan on taking him to the vet but money is tight and it doesn't seem to bother him at all so I am waiting for the time...

Many people love the idea of owning a dog but one thing that they have to keep in mind often times, is that the dog needs to be trained. While the pet may look heart-breakingly cute when it's in a shelter or at the pound, picking out the dog is only the first part of the relationship between dog owner and the animal. Many people don't understand that they have to put time and effort into socializing the dog.
An unsocialized dog will intimidate others, tear up the home, and will create an environment that can become so bad that the it will have to be returned. Many times when dogs have to be returned to shelters or to other resources, it will end up euthanized, which is very heartbreaking. All of this can be spared if a person learns the various techniques in order to socialize the dog.
One thing that they have to understand is that the he wants to be told what to do. It's in the canine nature to follow a leader. The dog will be more than willing to obey the leadership of its master. Here's a look at some common techniques that are used in dog training:
"Dog Whispering"
This is a technique that has been around for a while, but gained national notoriety over the last 10 years. Some people might hear this term and wonder how in the world whispering to a dog can train it! Whispering isn't meant to be taken literally in this case. As trainers have shown, whispering is a term that refers to connecting with a being or an entity on a very deep and almost spiritual level. When it comes to dog training techniques, dog whispering involves careful observation of the dog's behavior and actions.
It literally entails getting inside the mind and the behavior system of the canine. When a person uses dog whispering techniques, they interact with the dog on the canine level. Again, one the most common mistakes that people make is treating the dog like a small human being.
"Reward Training"
Reward training is very simple and it's one of the older tricks that works. This is a simple method of training the dog by positive reinforcement. Once he does what it is told to do, it receives a treat. How this works is that the dog owner must entice the dog towards the treat. Once the canine develops awareness for the treat, it develops a strong desire for it. When the desire for it is extremely strong, the dog owner pulls back. Then the dog receives a command and when the dog obeys the command, it receives the treat. The object is to make the dog associate a treat with the command.
"Clicker Training"
Other dog training techniques include one that is similar to reward training, which is called clicker training. How this works is that the clicker is incorporated to get the dog's attention. The clicker is clicked as a form of communication with the dog. It learns that there is a command or reward associated in conjunction with the clicker. Many people claim that this is fun, and they actually make a game with the dog by using the clicker for their dog training tasks.
"Ultrasonic Whistle"
Last, a relatively new form of dog training technique is called the ultrasonic whistle. This works because the ultrasonic sound is only heard by the dog. When the owner is trying to communicate a command, or stop the dog from barking, they will blow on their whistle when they want to communicate a command to the dog. The benefit of this is that the humans can't hear this noise, but the dog can hear it, and they will learn to associate the sound with a command.
Dog training techniques aren't hard to incorporate, but they are something that absolutely must be incorporated from the time a dog owner brings their new dog home. No matter how old or how young the dog is, they will need training. Once they are trained properly, they will be a wonderful addition to one's family.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aU1VS
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

The owner of the dog needs to know how to "operate" the dog, same way you can get into a car that's in perfect running order but if you don't know how to drive you won't have much luck making the car go anywhere. If the owner doesn't know how to maintain the training, the dog will soon become untrained again. Read more here https://tinyurl.im/UeQvg
People seem to think that once a dog is trained, that's it. Not true. You must reinforce the dog's training every single day in some way. It's best if the owner and the dog go together to get trained. As a professional trainer once said to me "We can train any dog in 2 days. It takes longer to train the owners

has your dog bumped his nose or cut it?
my dog got his nose pretty near split and now it doesnt get wet one one side and it fits your description.
but, what the vet said was its nerve damage.
he had to have a medication (drops) to put in his food to reactivate the nerves.
see my question called "question for vets" and you'll get an idea of wat i mean.
I HAVE expirience, and its rarely dehidration.
dogs noses are wet naturally. and when suddenly, the nose stops getting wet, you got a problem.
but theres a certain nerve in the brain that controlls this area. it has either died of gotten damaged.
i think its a nose injury.
the nose gets wet to clean itself out. and it can irritate the dog when the nose isnt being cleaned, so you will have to clean the nose inside and out for him with a Qtip and put vaseline on the iside.
don't worry. he will not die!
