Only through cage bars. The two should never be introduced to one another. I have had two canaries killed by two different hamsters. The canaries escaged their cage and flew into the hamster cages to eat the hamster seed. The sight that I found wasn't pretty. So I know that hamsters will attack, kill and eat birds when given the oppurtunity.

Cockatiels are hookbills with a very mean bite when they want to. The cockatiel could inflect some bad bites to the hamster as well.

They are best left as friends from afar!

You could put them in the same room - the cockatiel might like to watch the hamster. But don't ever leave them out together unsupervised. My cockatiel didn't like my sister's guinea pig and would hiss at it whenever it got within a couple feet of her. The best thing to keep your cockatiel happy and not lonely, if you don't have any more time to spend with it yourself, is another cockatiel.

I've seen all different species of animals become friends but you cannot tell until you introduce them to each other. There are no guarantees. Get a hamster and another cockatiel for the one you have. If you only get the hamster, you could put the cages near each other so they would see each other and have company.

Maybe. I have a cockatiel who is in love with my basset hound. He sings to her, follows her around, preens her hair, and even the dog even lets him eat out of his bowl!

The problem is, its just so hard to tell if they will get along before you get one. I can imagine that a tiel will probably like a hamsters long fur, and not feel so threatened by a hamster's size. But you know how tiel's can be jumpy, so the bird might be afraid of the hamster for a while.

I am so curious to know how it turns out!
