Take him/her into your new house for about a week. Then...this may sound very weird, but smear peanut butter on his paws and let him outside. Peanut butter sticks fairly well to their paws and a bit comes off every time they take a step. When they want to go back to the house, they follow the smell of the peanut butter. I know, you probably think I'm crazy, but it really works. I did it to my two cats and they're fine. You only need to do it the first time they go outside.

Don't let him outside. At least for the first few weeks.

Average Outdoor cat life span - 2 to 3 years

Average Indoor Cat life span - 13 - 14 years

Try to give him a room with his food, litter and familiar things. Let him acclimate slowly or at his pace. Don't let him outside right away. Make sure he is settled in his new home before he goes out so he does not try to return to the previous home/territory.

if you put bacon grease on his paws (COOLED OF COURSE) by the time he finishes licking it off he will have created a new scent for himself so to speak and will not go back to old house by following scent
